Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, has revealed that The Cheetahs’ fighting spirit against Nigeria earned them an historic win over the three-time African champions.
Rohr masterminded Benin Republic’s first ever victory over Nigeria after The Cheetahs outclassed Finidi George’s side 2-1 at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Monday.
The Cheetahs came from a goal down to beat the Eagles and move up to the top of Group C after four games with seven points while the Eagles remain fifth with just three points in Group C.
Raphael Onyedika opened the scoring for the Super Eagles in the 27th minute but quick goals from Jodel Dossou and skipper Steve Mounie secured a hard fought win for Rohr’s side.
Reacting to a chat from our correspondent on how he inspired Benin to their second group win, Rohr said, “Our fighting spirit helped us beat the Eagles and it was always a pleasure to see my former players again.
“We were very good on the ball and were aggressive. This result shows we are progressing.”
Rohr was sacked after qualifying Nigeria for the delayed 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2022 World Cup play-offs.
