Zadok Yohanna made his Premier League debut for Brighton as the Seagulls secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in their opening game of the 2026/27 season at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

The 19-year-old winger made his competitive debut for Brighton in the Conference League on Thursday and has now added Premier League minutes to his growing experience as he continues to adapt in England.

The Seagulls delivered a dominant display against Unai Emery’s side, scoring four goals in the first half before Aston Villa were reduced to 10 men, ensuring Brighton made a perfect start to their new Premier League campaign.

Brighton took the lead after just eight minutes following a defensive error from Villa, with Victor Lindelöf inadvertently turning the ball into his own net. The hosts doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Maxim De Cuyper found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Fabian Hürzeler’s side continued their impressive first-half performance as Jack Hinshelwood headed home from close range in the 30th minute to make it 3-0. Hinshelwood completed his brace seconds later after another mistake from Villa left Brighton four goals ahead.

Villa’s difficult afternoon got even worse when João Gomes was shown a straight red card for a violent kick on Georginio Rutter, leaving Emery’s side with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

With the job effectively done before the break, Brighton took greater control of the second half, keeping possession and continuing to threaten the Villa goal. The visitors, meanwhile, defended deep in an attempt to avoid conceding further goals.

Yohanna was introduced in the 78th minute to make his Premier League debut, with the Nigerian winger replacing Mats Wieffer. Another debutant, Ibrahim Osman, was also brought on at the same time, taking the place of De Cuyper.

Brighton comfortably managed the closing stages to complete a commanding 4-0 victory, giving Yohanna a memorable introduction to Premier League football.

The Seagulls will return to action on Thursday when they welcome Tromsø for the second leg of their Conference League play-off. The first leg ended in a goalless draw, meaning Brighton need a win to book their place in the league phase of the competition.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, will be hoping to recover from the heavy defeat when they host defending champions Arsenal on Monday, August 31.
