Musa Francis James, Akanbi Aderonke win 2026 Great Abeokuta 10KM race, claim $1,000 each

Musa Francis James and Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories respectively at the 2026 Great Abeokuta 10KM Race on Saturday.

The event, which started at Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, and finished at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, brought together over 3000 runners to compete for honours in the prestigious road race.

James claimed gold in the men’s category after crossing the finish line first in 30:25:33 to pocket the $1,000 winner’s prize.

Ilya Raymond finished second in 30:38:06 and received $750, while Davwi Gyang Sunday completed the podium after clocking 30:47:00 to claim $500.

In the women’s category, Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo emerged as the winner with a time of 35:00:69, earning the $1,000 first-place prize.

Bulus Mary Jah finished second in 35:58:71 to take home $750, while Nwantiyi Teyei Davou secured third place after recording a time of 36:03:09, earning $500.

The 2026 edition of the Great Abeokuta 10KM Race was strictly reserved for Nigerian participants, making it a showcase of homegrown athletic talent. Despite the local-only format, the total prize purse remained unchanged, ensuring the leading finishers were rewarded with the same financial incentives.

Beyond the competition, the race provided Nigerian athletes with an opportunity to display their endurance, determination and competitive spirit, while also showcasing the culturally significant landscapes of Abeokuta to participants and spectators.
