…Charles Martin hopes win over Ajagba could create pathway for world title

American heavyweight Charles Martin has declared his intention to knock out Nigeria’s Efe Ajagba when they clash on February 15 in the Zuffa Boxing main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The former IBF world heavyweight champion heads into the bout on the back of an emphatic first-round knockout of Matthew McKinney last November. Ajagba, meanwhile, enters as the favourite, buoyed by an impressive draw against hard-hitting DR Congo boxer Martin Bakole last May.

Now 39, Martin, whose first career defeat came against Anthony Joshua in 2016, insists he still has unfinished business in the sport and believes a convincing victory over Ajagba could reignite his path toward another world title shot.

“I definitely have unfinished business in boxing,” Martin told Sky Sports. “It is my goal to become a two-time heavyweight champion. Obviously, beating Efe Ajagba will be a step in the right direction.”

While acknowledging Ajagba’s quality and recent run of five wins and a draw, Martin remains confident in his preparation and power.

“Anyone can get stunned in boxing. Efe is a strong opponent, but I am in great shape and will be looking for the KO,” he said.

“Once I beat Efe, I definitely think you will see me in the UK again to fight for a title. I am grateful to be part of Zuffa Boxing, who are staging fights around the world.

“I am looking forward to staying active, closing out my career with the biggest fights possible, and winning another world title.”
