Ibrahim Musa Gusau has officially resigned as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bringing his tenure at the helm of Nigerian football to an abrupt end.
Gusau announced his decision during a press briefing at the NFF Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday afternoon, confirming that his resignation takes immediate effect. General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi also stepped down from his position.
“After consultation with family, friends and stakeholders, I just want to tell you that I have decided to resign my position,” Gusau said.
“I have also advised my board members to resign,” he added.

The announcement ends uncertainty surrounding the future of the NFF leadership, following reports that Gusau and several members of the federation’s Executive Committee had stepped down amid mounting pressure.
Gusau’s resignation comes after a difficult period for Nigerian football, with the Super Eagles failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons suffering a historic failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nigeria had previously featured at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
The Falcons’ World Cup hopes ended after a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualification play-off, following their 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The setbacks intensified criticism of the NFF administration and prompted the federation to establish a fact-finding committee to investigate the causes of the national teams’ poor performances.
The leadership crisis also comes with the NFF’s elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Gusau’s resignation and the expected departure of other board members could now have significant implications for the planned electoral process.
Gusau was elected NFF President in September 2022, succeeding Amaju Pinnick. His resignation now leaves Nigerian football facing a major leadership transition at a critical juncture.
