The Super Falcons’ hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup have been dashed after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in their playoff clash at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday.
The defeat brings an end to Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. The 10-time African champions will miss the global showpiece for the first time in their history.
Nigeria entered the decisive encounter hoping to recover from their disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign, where they were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarterfinals.
However, they were unable to overcome a resilient South African side that secured victory through goals from Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane.

South Africa dominated possession during the opening stages and created the first clear opportunity in the seventh minute when Linda Motlhalo fired an effort just over the crossbar.
The Super Falcons responded four minutes later, with Rasheedat Ajibade seeing her effort from outside the box deflected narrowly wide.
Nigeria came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval in the 39th minute. Jennifer Echegini delivered a dangerous cross into the box, but neither Asisat Oshoala nor Uchenna Kanu could connect with the ball. Michelle Alozie then fired narrowly wide from the edge of the box.
Motlhalo had another opportunity from distance shortly before halftime, but her effort again sailed over the crossbar as both teams went into the break level.
The Super Falcons started the second half brightly, with Oshoala twice coming close to putting Nigeria ahead within the opening five minutes. South Africa goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, however, combined with her defence to keep the striker at bay.
Head coach Justin Madugu made his first substitution in the 55th minute, bringing on Joy Omewa for Oshoala in search of a breakthrough.
But South Africa struck moments later. Hildah Magaia received a superb through ball from midfield before squaring for Kgatlana, who finished past Chiamaka Nnadozie to give Banyana Banyana a 1-0 lead.
South Africa almost doubled their advantage four minutes later, but Nnadozie produced an important save to keep Nigeria within touching distance.
Madugu responded with a double change in the 63rd minute, introducing Folashade Ijamilusi and Christy Ucheibe for Francisca Ordega and Deborah Abiodun.
Nigeria continued to push for an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the 74th minute. Uchenna Kanu found herself in a promising position inside the box as she headed a pinpoint cross towards goal, but Swart produced a brilliant point-blank save to preserve South Africa’s lead.
South Africa punished Nigeria two minutes later. A corner kick was headed towards captain Refiloe Jane, whose low effort took a heavy deflection before beating Nnadozie and finding the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Ijamilusi had an opportunity to reduce the deficit shortly afterwards but was unable to convert from close range.
Madugu made his final change in the 82nd minute, sending Gift Monday on for Kanu as the Super Falcons intensified their search for a way back into the game.
Alozie came close in the 85th minute when she met a pinpoint cross at the far post, but her header was cleared away. The fullback was involved again moments later when another header was blocked by the hand of Jane inside the box.
After a VAR review, Nigeria were awarded a penalty, while Jane was shown a second yellow card and sent off. Ucheibe stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 2-1, giving Nigeria renewed hope of completing a dramatic comeback.
With a numerical advantage, the Super Falcons threw players forward in search of an equaliser. They almost found it in the fourth minute of added time when Ijamilusi’s effort from a corner kick struck the crossbar.
Swart then produced one final decisive intervention in the dying moments, using her leg to deny Alozie and secure South Africa a huge victory.
The result means South Africa will join Ghana, who earlier defeated Ivory Coast 2-1, as Africa’s representatives at the inter-confederation play-offs for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For Nigeria, however, the defeat marks a historic disappointment as the Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time ever.
