Ibrahim Musa Gusau has reportedly resigned as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), alongside several members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
The reported development comes after months of pressure over Nigerian football’s recent setbacks. According to Vanguard Newspaper on Thursday, August 27, 2026, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and other board members had stepped down from their positions. However, official confirmation of the reported resignation is still awaited.
The pressure on the NFF leadership has grown sharply in recent months.
Nigeria’s national teams have endured several major disappointments. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Falcons then suffered another historic setback.
Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. The defeat ended their title defence.
It also denied the Falcons automatic World Cup qualification.
Nigeria then faced South Africa in the qualification playoff. Banyana Banyana won the decisive clash 2-1.
That result left Nigeria facing its first-ever absence from the Women’s World Cup. The Falcons had qualified for every edition since the tournament began in 1991.
The leadership crisis has also coincided with scrutiny of NFF finances. Security agencies are investigating the use of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund.
President Bola Tinubu approved the money in 2024. It was intended to clear outstanding payments to Nigeria’s national teams.
The investigation has added another layer to the pressure surrounding the federation.
Reports indicate that several NFF Executive Committee members have also left their positions.
Vanguard reported that eight of the 13 board members had allegedly quit. That development could affect the federation’s planned elective congress.
The reported resignation of Gusau could therefore create fresh uncertainty. For now, the key issue remains official confirmation.
