Nigeria international defender Oluwatosin Demehin has completed a move to Benfica. The 24-year-old centre-back has signed with the Portuguese giants until 2029. The transfer adds another chapter to her growing European career.
Demehin ended her Galatasaray spell after featuring regularly last season. She played 28 matches across league and European competition.
Demehin explains why she chose Benfica
The Nigerian defender began her senior career at Sunshine Queens. She later represented Rivers Angels before moving to Europe.
In 2022, Demehin joined French side Stade de Reims. She then moved to Galatasaray in 2024. Her two seasons in Turkey helped strengthen her experience at club level.
Now, Benfica represents her next challenge.
Speaking to BTV, Demehin explained why she selected the six-time Portuguese champions.
”Benfica is the best club in Portugal and one of the best clubs in the world. So I know that, being here, I can improve my performance”, she considered.
Demehin also consulted Nigeria teammate Christy Ucheibe before making the move.
”Before coming here, I spoke with her during the National Team training camp. She told me many beautiful things about the Club”, she revealed.
Nigeria defender brings major international experience
Demehin has also built a strong international résumé with the Super Falcons. She featured at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She also represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In 2025, she won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Falcons. She was also part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The defender described her approach on the pitch in three words.
”I would describe myself as hardworking, disciplined and determined.”
At Benfica, Demehin will wear the number four shirt. She joins the women’s team ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The defender also wants to understand more about her new club’s history.
”I would like to know many things about Benfica, but this is my first time here. I know that the Club has a lot of history. I would love to visit the Museum to learn about the history of the Club”, she noted.
Demehin sets clear Benfica target
The Nigerian international has already outlined her ambition in Lisbon. She wants to help Benfica compete successfully during the new campaign.
”My goal is to contribute to the success of the team and achieve great things.”
She also delivered a message to the club’s supporters.
”Benfica fans can expect the best from me and my best performance.”
Demehin’s arrival gives Benfica another experienced defender. It also keeps a Nigerian international on the European stage.
