Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, remains confident of qualifying Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup, adding that his team won’t throw in the towel.
George failed to inspire the Eagles to victories in his first two games against South Africa and Benin Republic.
Last Friday, George’s team played out a 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio stadium before they slumped to a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic at the Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Monday.
Raphael Onyedika scored first for the Eagles in the 27th minute to crown a bright start but two goals in the space of 11 minutes from Jodel Dossou and captain Steve Mounie secured a first ever win for Benin Republic over Nigeria in a competitive game.
The result means the Eagles are without a win after four games – one defeat and three draws and remain fifth in Group C with three points.
Reacting to how his side will bounce back and qualify for the World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA, George said, “There is no special formula for that.
“We have to see how to get the best out of the players everybody must be committed and with that committment, we will win games and I believe we will games.
“And when we win games the battle will still be there.
“We can’t throw in the towel because we have only three points from four games. We have to find a way for the players to perform,” he said.
Matchday five of the qualifiers will resume in March 2025.
