Esther Okoronkwo has made a successful return from injury after spending 56 days on the sidelines, handing the Super Falcons a timely boost ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The 29-year-old featured for the first time since her injury when she replaced Sarah Stratigakis in the 65th minute of AFC Toronto’s 3-1 victory over Vancouver on Sunday, a crucial win that saw the club end a two-match winless streak.
Okoronkwo had been sidelined since suffering a meniscus tear during AFC Toronto’s goalless draw against Halifax on May 3, raising concerns over her availability for this year’s WAFCON. After returning to training earlier this month, the Nigerian forward has now completed her comeback with an appearance off the bench.
During her absence, AFC Toronto struggled for consistency, recording just one win, two defeats and two draws in five league matches, underlining the influence of the Super Falcons forward in the attacking third.

After the first half which ended 1-1, AFC Toronto secured all three points against Vancouver through second-half strikes from Lauren Rowe and Kaylee Hunter. The victory lifted the club to fourth place in the Northern Super League standings with 12 points, seven behind leaders Ottawa Rapid, having played a game less.
Okoronkwo was among the standout performers as the Super Falcons claimed a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in Morocco last year. The forward scored twice and registered seven assists, playing a key role throughout the tournament.
Her return is a major boost for head coach Justin Madugu as the Super Falcons prepare to defend their continental crown at the 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16. Nigeria are drawn in Group C, where they will face Zambia, Egypt and Malawi in the group stage
