Esther Okoronkwo has sustained a meniscus tear, and is facing a race against time to be fit for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Super Falcons forward had made an impressive start to the Northern Super League campaign, scoring the winner and providing an assist as AFC Toronto secured a 3-2 victory over Vancouver.
However, she was taken off in the 38th minute of Toronto’s goalless draw with Halifax as she could not continue the match.
In his press conference, AFC Toronto’s head coach Marco Milanovic confirmed the extent of the injury.

“There’s a bit of a meniscus damage to her knee. The initial prognosis is that she’ll be out for about six weeks,” he revealed.
Milanovic acknowledged Okoronkwo’s importance to the team but said he has full confidence in the rest of his squad to step up while she’s out.
“She’s obviously a key player for us. I love this group of players. I have a lot of confidence in them. Any kind of injury opens up opportunities for someone else. We have a lot of depth up top, and I’m very confident those players will take that opportunity and make the most of it.”

Esther Okoronkwo was one of the standout performers as the Super Falcons secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in Morocco last year.
She scored two goals and provided seven assists, consistently showcasing her class throughout the competition. Justin Madugu will thus be hoping that the 29-year-old gets fully fit before the commencement of the 2026 WAFCON on 25 July.
