…‘I’m in the best shape of my life’ Kanyinsola Ajayi
Nigerian sprint star Kanyinsola Ajayi produced a sensational performance to claim the men’s 100m title at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, clocking a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds to secure his second national crown of the year.
Representing Auburn University, Ajayi stormed to victory at Hayward Field, adding the outdoor 100m title to the NCAA indoor 60m championship he won earlier this season.
His time of 9.72 seconds, aided by a 2.2 m/s tailwind, ranks as the second-fastest all-conditions performance in NCAA history and underscores his emergence as one of the fastest sprinters in collegiate athletics.

The final delivered one of the deepest sprint fields ever seen at the NCAA Championships, with six athletes breaking the 10-second barrier. Louisiana State University’s Jaiden Reid finished second in 9.82 seconds, while Arkansas’ Jelani Watkins claimed third place in 9.87 seconds.
The combination of favorable conditions and the renowned speed-friendly atmosphere of Hayward Field produced a race for the ages, with Ajayi proving too strong for a stacked field of elite collegiate sprinters.
Reacting to his victory, Ajayi declared that he is in the best shape of his life, emphasizing that his mindset sets him apart from the rest of the field.
“I’m just different. Everything about me is different. I come from the hood, I was raised differently, and people don’t always understand that. My mentality is different. I’m in the best shape of my life right now,” he said after the race.
The victory marks another significant milestone in Ajayi’s rapid rise and further highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in global sprinting. With the outdoor season reaching its peak, the Auburn standout has firmly established himself as one of the athletes to watch on the international stage.
