Sporting Lagos’ highly anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) derby against Ikorodu City has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 30.
The Matchday Two fixture was initially billed for Sunday, September 6, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, but was later moved to Friday, September 4 following reports that the venue would be unavailable due to a political rally.
However, that arrangement has now been abandoned, with the Lagos derby set to take place at the end of the month.
Sporting Lagos confirmed the development in a statement published on their official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, expressing disappointment over the postponement while urging supporters to turn out for their next fixture against Inter Lagos.

“We had really been looking forward to Sunday. After we fought back to get to the NPFL, our first home game was going to be a Lagos derby, and we were going to do it in front of you. It was the perfect way to come back,” the club stated.
“Unfortunately, our game against Ikorodu City, originally scheduled for Sunday, September 6th, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 30th. We’ll share the full matchday details once confirmed.”
The club assured supporters who had already purchased tickets that their tickets would remain valid for their next weekend home game.
Sporting Lagos’ next game will now be against Inter Lagos on Sunday, September 13, at Onikan in what will be another exciting Lagos derby. Although the Tech Boys will be the away side, the fixture will mark the first meeting between two Lagos clubs in the top flight in a decade.
“Home or away does not change what this game means. It is still Sunday. It is still Onikan. It is still a Lagos derby. Let’s make it special,” Sporting Lagos said.
The postponement means both clubs will have to wait until the final week of September for their much-anticipated NPFL encounter.
Sporting Lagos will be particularly keen to bounce back after a disappointing start to their 2026/27 campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Doma United in their opening fixture.
Ikorodu City, meanwhile, made an impressive start to the new season. The Oga Boys came from behind to defeat newly promoted Ranchers Bees 3-1, securing all three points in their opening game.
Ikorodu City will next travel to face Abia Warriors, while Sporting Lagos will look to get their first points of the campaign when they meet Inter Lagos on September 13.
