Former United States President Barack Obama has congratulated former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown and D’Tigers-eligible player OG Anunoby after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 on Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center to clinch the 2025/26 NBA Championship.

The victory ended a 53-year title drought for the Knicks, who captured their first NBA championship since 1973. Star guard Jalen Brunson led the way with a sensational 45-point performance, inspiring a remarkable comeback after New York trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half.

The Knicks entered the contest knowing that a road victory would secure the franchise’s long-awaited championship, while the Spurs were determined to force a Game 6 and keep their title hopes alive.

Following a tense opening two minutes in which neither side managed to score due to intense defensive play, NBA Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama opened the scoring and helped the Spurs take control of the first quarter, which ended 23-13 in their favour.

New York responded strongly in the second quarter, outscoring San Antonio 24-19 to reduce the deficit heading into halftime. The Spurs edged a closely contested third quarter 30-28, but the Knicks produced a championship-winning display in the final period, dominating 29-18 to complete a memorable four-point victory.

Brunson was deservedly named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player after his outstanding 45-point outing. Mikal Bridges added 14 points, while Josh Hart recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Anunoby, who played a pivotal role in the Knicks’ Game 4 victory, contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the title-clinching win.

The Knicks’ historic triumph has attracted congratulations from several high-profile figures around the world, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, a well-known basketball enthusiast.

Obama paid tribute to the entire team while specifically acknowledging head coach Mike Brown, Finals MVP Brunson, and Anunoby for their contributions to the championship run.

“Congrats to Coach Brown, Finals MVP Jalen Brunson, OG, and the rest of these incredible NBA Champion @NYKnicks! What a run!” Obama wrote on X.

Although he grew up in Chicago, Obama in recent years have shown love for the San Antonio Spurs especially with the resurgence of the team after the drafting of Victor Wembanyama.
