DR Congo completed a stunning comeback to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group K fixture on Sunday, sealing a historic place in the knockout stage of the competition for the first time.

The Leopards began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Portugal before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their second group match, leaving their hopes of progression hanging in the balance.

However, a brace from Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa, alongside a goal from Fiston Mayele, inspired DR Congo to a memorable victory as they finished third in Group K but advanced to the round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Uzbekistan took an early lead in the 10th minute through Eldor Shomurodov, but DR Congo produced a superb second-half comeback. Wissa levelled the score in the 68th minute from the penalty spot after winning the spot-kick himself.

Ten minutes later, the Leopards turned the game around as Fiston Mayele reacted quickest to slot home and make it 2-1. Wissa then wrapped up the victory deep into stoppage time, scoring his second goal of the match and third of the tournament in the 91st minute to secure a famous 3-1 triumph.

The victory sets up a round of 32 clash between DR Congo and England, while Uzbekistan bow out of the competition. Elsewhere, Colombia secured top spot in Group K following a goalless draw with second-placed Portugal.

Colombia will now face Ghana in the next round, while Portugal are set for a difficult knockout tie against Croatia.
