Samson Adamu becomes first Nigerian appointed CAF General Secretary

Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s 70-year history.

Adamu had served as acting General Secretary since March following the departure of Véron Mosengo-Omba. His confirmation places him in charge of CAF’s central administration, with responsibility for implementing the organisation’s decisions and coordinating its competitions, departments and relationships with its member associations.

The Nigerian administrator is already familiar with CAF’s operations. He previously served as Director of Competitions before becoming Director of Tournaments and Events, roles that placed him at the centre of planning and delivering the confederation’s major competitions.

Before joining CAF, Adamu established himself within the sports industry through projects including Copa Lagos, the international beach-soccer event launched in 2011. He has also worked across event organisation, commercial development and football administration.

Following his appointment in an acting capacity earlier this year, Adamu said he was determined to serve African football “with humility, integrity and professionalism.” His substantive confirmation gives him the opportunity to provide greater continuity at a time when CAF is expanding its competitions and attempting to strengthen its governance.

NFF acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme welcomed the appointment and described it as a significant moment for Nigerian football administration. The position is one of the most influential non-elective roles in African football, with the General Secretary responsible for managing CAF’s daily affairs under the direction of its president and Executive Committee.

Adamu’s appointment will naturally be celebrated in Nigeria, but it also carries considerable responsibility. CAF continues to face questions over competition organisation, financial transparency, scheduling and the development of football across its 54 member associations. The importance of the appointment will ultimately be measured by the quality of the administration produced during his tenure.
