Calvin Bassey rues missed chances in Fulham’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa

Calvin Bassey believes Fulham could have taken all three points from Aston Villa after missed chances left the Nigerian defender reflecting on a 1–1 Premier League draw at Villa Park on Saturday.

Bassey praised his teammates’ performance but felt Fulham had created enough opportunities to leave Birmingham with a victory.

“A good away performance, we know how hard it is to come here against a team with a lot of quality. I’m proud of the boys, they did well,” he said.

“We should have got more, missed two chances inside the six-yard box, of course I know the boys are working their socks off to get in the positions and finishing, we could have took all three but we’ve got to keep positive.”

Nicolas Jackson gave Villa the lead in the 39th minute before a Zion Suzuki own goal brought Fulham level in the 64th minute.

Bassey and fellow Nigeria international Alex Iwobi both started for the visitors. The defender received a yellow card in first-half stoppage time, while Iwobi made way for Tom Cairney after 75 minutes.

The result extended Fulham’s unbeaten league run to three matches following consecutive 1–0 victories over Hull City and Coventry City.

For Bassey, recovering a point also demonstrated progress from matches earlier in the campaign when Fulham had failed to protect promising positions.

He highlighted the defeat at Ipswich Town as an example. Fulham had led that game before conceding twice late on to lose 2–1.

Saturday’s comeback offered a more encouraging outcome, even if the defender’s assessment reflected frustration that the visitors had not completed the turnaround.

Bassey also credited the squad’s growing understanding of the manager’s demands, saying the improvement had been built through consistent work.

“Since the start of the season, we’ve been improving each week, everyone is working hard and bought into how the manager wants us to play, understanding each other, hopefully things keep going up from here.”

Fulham have now collected seven points from their last three Premier League matches, conceding only once during that sequence.
