Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed satisfaction after scoring his first Premier League goal for Coventry City in their 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday, October 31, Bold Sports reports.
The Nigerian striker highlighted the importance of the team’s performance and explained how Coventry’s game plan helped him find the net.
Awoniyi returned to Coventry’s starting line-up for the Sunderland clash. He had previously featured in the team’s campaign but had yet to score a Premier League goal for the club. His latest effort helped Coventry secure three valuable points and move out of the relegation zone.
Awoniyi explains how Coventry’s game plan worked
Speaking after the match, Awoniyi emphasised the importance of the victory. He also credited Coventry’s collective performance and explained how the team’s counter-pressing approach created his scoring opportunity.

“I think the most important thing is the three points. I think the team from the outset played good together, the gameplan worked. I think for the goal, it was just what we planned. Every time counter-press and I just have to keep going one against one with the defender and just pick my spot which was a goal!”
The forward’s comments highlighted Coventry’s preparation and execution. His goal came in the 37th minute after he dispossessed Luke O’Nien before finishing past Sunderland’s goalkeeper.
Coventry secure crucial Premier League victory
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Awoniyi then doubled Coventry’s advantage before half-time, giving Frank Lampard’s side a comfortable lead.
Jack Rudoni extended the hosts’ advantage seven minutes into the second half. His effort took a deflection off Omar Alderete before beating goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
Sunderland pulled one back in the 67th minute through Enzo Le Fée’s penalty. The referee awarded the spot-kick after Ethan Pinnock handled the ball, with VAR confirming the decision.

Coventry maintained their advantage despite Sunderland’s attempts to fight back. Alderete’s dismissal in stoppage time further complicated the visitors’ efforts.
Awoniyi and Coventry look ahead
The victory lifted Coventry to nine points from nine matches. It also ended their consecutive league defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.
Awoniyi’s contribution offered encouragement as Coventry continue their fight to climb the Premier League table. The Nigerian will hope to build on his breakthrough as the season progresses.
Coventry will next travel to face Everton on November 6, with Awoniyi aiming to maintain his momentum and add to his Premier League goal tally.
