Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal for Coventry City as they defeated Sunderland 3–1 on Saturday, October 31, to move out of the relegation zone.
The Super Eagles striker struck in the 37th minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena, helping Frank Lampard’s side secure their third league victory of the season.
Awoniyi returned to the starting line-up as one of four changes following Coventry’s defeat to Fulham. Stephen Mfuni, Victor Torp and Yann Gboho also came into the team, with the Nigerian leading the attack.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute, putting the hosts ahead in a meeting between two teams that began the afternoon in the bottom three.
Awoniyi doubled the advantage before the interval. He dispossessed Luke O’Nien and finished to give Coventry a 2–0 lead, ending his wait for a league goal for the club.

The hosts strengthened their position seven minutes after the restart. Jack Rudoni’s effort took a deflection off Omar Alderete and beat Robin Roefs to make it 3–0, with Torp providing the assist.
Sunderland reduced the deficit through Enzo Le Fée’s penalty in the 67th minute. The spot-kick followed a handball by Ethan Pinnock, with the decision confirmed after a VAR review.
Awoniyi’s afternoon ended in the 72nd minute when Sidiki Chérif replaced him. Coventry also introduced Brandon Thomas-Asante for Gboho during the same stoppage.
The visitors continued searching for a route back, but Coventry protected their two-goal cushion. Carl Rushworth denied substitute Wilson Isidor with a save during the closing stages.
Sunderland finished with ten men after Alderete received two yellow cards in stoppage time. He was first cautioned for fouling Chérif before another infringement against Rudoni brought his dismissal.

The victory took Coventry to nine points from nine matches and ended a run of consecutive league defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.
For Awoniyi, it was a productive return to the starting side, with his goal contributing directly to an important result in Coventry’s survival campaign.
Coventry next travel to Everton for a league fixture scheduled for November 6.
