After months of stakeholder engagements across the basketball community, former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji has formally declared his intention to contest for the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

Speaking at a world press conference in Lagos, the former D’Tigers star said his decision was not driven by personal ambition, but by a commitment to serve, rebuild, reunite and reposition Nigerian basketball for sustainable success.

With more than 30 years of experience across different facets of the game as a player, club owner, administrator and philanthropist, Oyedeji, who was a member of the Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) Players Commission from 2014 to 2019, noted that Nigerian basketball has the talent and human resources needed to thrive if backed by the right structure and leadership.

The incumbent president of Nigeria Olympian Association (NOA) remarked that Nigerian basketball is at a defining moment. He pledged that if elected, his administration would focus on creating a sustainable basketball system capable of delivering lasting value to players, coaches, officials, stakeholders and corporate partners.

The 3rd Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) said his plans centre on revitalising the domestic leagues, improving player welfare, strengthening governance, and developing sustainable infrastructure. He also pledged to rebuild corporate confidence through accountability and leverage global partnerships to attract investment into Nigerian basketball.

“Every decision made by the NBBF will prioritise the health, financial well-being and professional career pathways of our players on the domestic scene and our various national teams,” he said.

“We will establish professional operational standards for players, ensure timely payment of allowances and provide comprehensive insurance coverage.”

Oyedeji said he would bring his international experience, commitment to good governance, and proven passion for youth development to Nigerian basketball’s administration.

Oyedeji who was the first African to become Secretary General of World Olympians Association, stressed that his ambition goes beyond winning an election, insisting that his ultimate objective is to leave the sport stronger and better positioned for future generations.

“I am not coming to take from basketball; I am coming to build a legacy that will outlive us all,” Oyedeji declared.
