Celtic’s option to extend Kelechi Iheanacho’s contract by an additional year has reportedly expired, leaving the Super Eagles forward facing uncertainty over his future at the Scottish champions.

The 29-year-old arrived at Celtic on a one-year contract after mutually terminating his deal with Sevilla during the 2025 summer transfer window.

After scoring three goals in his opening months at the club, Iheanacho established himself as an important figure during the latter stages of the campaign, netting several crucial goals as Celtic secured a domestic double.

His late match-winning strikes against Kilmarnock, Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell underlined his value as an impact substitute in Martin O’Neill’s side. The Nigerian striker also grabbed a brace in Celtic’s emphatic 6-2 Scottish Cup semi-final victory over St Mirren before finding the net again in the final against Dunfermline.

Despite his impressive contributions, reports from Scotland suggest Celtic have decided against activating the clause that would have extended his stay by another year, fuelling fresh speculation over his next move.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City forward is understood to be eager to remain at Parkhead, while head coach Martin O’Neill is also reportedly keen to retain his services.

However, with Celtic yet to offer him a fresh contract, clubs in Turkey are said to be preparing lucrative offers for the Nigerian, while interest from other European teams is also beginning to grow.

For now, Iheanacho has returned to Nigeria, where he is training individually as he continues preparations for the new season while awaiting clarity over his future.
