Uchenna Ogundu makes Bundesliga debut as Augsburg edge Wolfsburg 3-2‎‎

Nigerian forward Uchenna Ogundu made his Bundesliga debut for Augsburg as they came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena on 21 February 2026.

‎‎The 19-year-old, who joined Augsburg from Turkish side Alanyaspor during the winter transfer window, signed a long-term contract running until June 2031. He was included in the matchday squad and was introduced in the 81st minute replacing Robin Fellhauer, receiving his first taste of German top-flight football.

Head coach Manuel Baum had previously indicated that the young striker would be gradually integrated into the team to allow him to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Bundesliga.

‎‎The match began in favour of the hosts, with Wolfsburg opening the scoring in the 41st minute through Yannick Gerhardt’s towering header from a well-delivered corner. Augsburg responded in the 59th minute when Rodrigo Ribeiro finished a well-worked team move to level the score at 1-1.‎‎

Wolfsburg regained the lead in the 71st minute following a swift counter-attack, putting Augsburg under pressure. However, the visitors refused to back down.

Substitute Michael Gregoritsch converted a penalty in the 87th minute to restore parity at 2-2, keeping the home fans on edge. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when defensive midfielder Elvis Rexhbeçaj struck a precise shot from outside the penalty area into the bottom right corner, sealing a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory for Augsburg.

‎‎Ogundu is expected to gradually play a larger role in the future as Augsburg look to bolster their attacking options for the rest of the season.
