Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka was named Man of the Match following Coventry City’s 2-0 away victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, as the Sky Blues extended their lead at the top of the English Championship table to three points.

The encounter marked Onyeka’s second appearance for Coventry, and he once again delivered an assured performance, featuring for 86 minutes before being replaced by Victor Torp.

Ephron Mason-Clark handed Coventry an early advantage in the fifth minute, while Jack Rudoni doubled the lead in the 32nd minute to seal a comfortable win.

Although Onyeka neither scored nor registered an assist, his composure, ball recovery, and ability to dictate the tempo in midfield proved instrumental in the victory, earning him the Man of the Match award.

For the second consecutive game, the Nigerian international received a standing ovation from the travelling supporters as he made his way off the pitch – a testament to his growing influence at the club.

Speaking after the game, Onyeka expressed his delight at the team’s performance, praising their resilience – particularly in the second half when West Brom pushed hard in search of a goal to get back into the contest.

“It was a great win away from home. It was difficult, but I’m happy we got the win today,” he said.

“We knew, especially in the first half, they were trying to break us down. We decided to stay in a medium block and didn’t give them anything. That discipline helped us in the second half.”

Onyeka joined Coventry on loan from Premier League side Brentford in search of regular playing time, and his early performances have already drawn praise from manager and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

With Coventry firmly in the promotion race, the club could consider making the move permanent should they secure a return to the top flight.
