Nigeria sealed a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match at the Rabat Olympic Stadium on Wednesday, Bold Sports reports.
The defending champions produced their most convincing display of the tournament to finish the group stage with back-to-back wins and keep their title defence alive.
The Super Falcons entered the decisive fixture after a difficult start to the competition. They suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to Malawi before responding with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, a match won by Asisat Oshoala’s decisive goal. That result left Nigeria needing another win against Egypt to reach the knockout rounds, and they answered in dominant fashion.
Nigeria settled quickly and opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Oshoala calmly converted from the penalty spot to give the Super Falcons an early advantage.
Rinsola Babajide then continued her impressive influence on the game. Deep into first-half stoppage time, she delivered a precise pass for Gift Monday, who doubled Nigeria’s lead with a composed finish.
Egypt refused to surrender before the interval. Nadine Ghazi converted a penalty in the 10th minute of first-half added time to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and keep the Cleopatras within touching distance.
Nigeria regained complete control soon after the restart. Babajide produced her second assist of the evening in the 57th minute, setting up Uchenna Kanu to restore the two-goal cushion.
The Super Falcons continued to attack and earned another penalty in the 81st minute. Christy Ucheibe made no mistake from the spot to increase the lead to 4-1.
Ghazi grabbed her second goal three minutes later after Yasmin Hassanin provided the assist, but Egypt’s response proved only a brief interruption.
Nigeria finished strongly in stoppage time. Rasheedat Ajibade converted another penalty in the first minute of added time before turning provider eight minutes later. Her pass found Joy Omewa, who completed the scoring with Nigeria’s sixth goal of the night.
The victory ensured Nigeria advanced to the quarter-finals alongside Malawi, who lost to Zambia 2-1 in the other Group C fixture.
Malawi finished top of the group on the tiebreak criteria after all three leading teams ended with six points. Nigeria also qualified with six points, while Zambia exited the competition despite recording two victories. Egypt finished bottom after losing all three matches and conceding 15 goals.
After recovering from a difficult opening defeat, Justine Madugu’s side head into the knockout stage with renewed confidence and a revived attack. Their six-goal display offered a timely reminder of their quality as they continue the defence of their continental crown.
