Victor Osimhen has explained why he chose to continue wearing Galatasaray’s No. 45 shirt instead of taking the club’s famous No. 9 jersey ahead of the new season, Bold Sports reports.
The Super Eagles striker chose to keep the number he believes has brought him success since arriving at the Turkish champions, despite expectations that he would take the shirt previously worn by Mauro Icardi.
The 27-year-old enjoyed another outstanding campaign with Galatasaray after completing his permanent move from Napoli last summer. He finished last season with 22 goals while wearing the No. 45 shirt. Osimhen also opened his preseason scoring account in a 3-3 friendly draw against Rennes, underlining his importance as Okan Buruk’s side prepares to defend its domestic titles.
Galatasaray’s hierarchy had prepared a No. 9 shirt bearing Osimhen’s name and also considered the commercial benefits of a jersey change. However, the Nigerian forward decided to remain with the number that has become closely associated with his success at Rams Park.
Speaking about the decision, Osimhen said:
”I expect you’ll sell more shirts, but I think you’ll understand me. Number 45 brought me good luck at Galatasaray.”
He added:
”I want to continue with the same number,”
The decision ended speculation that he would succeed Mauro Icardi as the club’s new No. 9.
Although Osimhen rejected the famous shirt number, reports in Turkey suggest Galatasaray’s management fully respected his decision. Instead, the striker could receive greater leadership responsibilities during the new campaign.
Head coach Okan Buruk is reportedly considering Osimhen as one of the team’s captains. Whenever Abdülkerim Bardakcı is unavailable, the Nigerian could wear the captain’s armband alongside Kaan Ayhan, Yunus Akgün and Barış Alper Yılmaz.
Osimhen first wore the No. 45 shirt during his time at Belgian club Charleroi, where he scored 20 goals before moving to Lille. He later wore No. 7 in France and No. 9 at Napoli, but his most prolific season came back in the No. 45 jersey at Galatasaray.
As the Turkish champions prepare for another demanding campaign, Osimhen will hope the number that has delivered goals, trophies and records continues to bring success.
