The Super Eagles of Nigeria are closing in on another historic landmark at the Africa Cup of Nations, sitting just one goal away from recording their 150th goal in the competition’s history.
Ademola Lookman’s strike against Tunisia took Nigeria’s AFCON goal tally to 149, underlining the team’s long-standing pedigree on the continental stage and their attacking momentum in the current tournament.
Nigeria’s AFCON scoring journey dates back to 1963, when Asuquo Ekpe netted the country’s first-ever goal at the competition, laying the foundation for decades of attacking presence at Africa’s biggest football stage.

Several iconic figures have since marked key milestones in that journey. Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s most celebrated striker, scored the Super Eagles’ 50th AFCON goal in 1990 against Zambia and later added the 60th in 1994 against Gabon. Obinna Nsofor continued the tradition of landmark goals, netting Nigeria’s 100th AFCON goal in 2006 against Tunisia and the 110th in 2010 versus Algeria.
Now, in the ongoing AFCON campaign, the Super Eagles are once again on the verge of history. Lookman’s 149th goal has brought Nigeria to the brink of another symbolic achievement, one that reflects both past greatness and present ambition.
As the tournament progresses, attention will turn to the next Super Eagles scorer, the player set to write the next chapter by delivering Nigeria’s 150th AFCON goal.
