Nigeria’s Falconets will begin their quest for a maiden FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title when they face Spain in their opening Group F fixture at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland on Monday.
The two-time runners-up will face the 2022 champions in what promises to be an exciting opening encounter, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm local time.
Nigeria will continue their group-stage campaign against China on Thursday, September 10, before facing New Caledonia on Sunday, September 13.
The Falconets head into the tournament with confidence after an encouraging buildup, having recorded a victory and a draw in their final two friendly matches against hosts Poland and South Korea respectively.

The Falconets will now hope to translate that form into competitive action as they target a winning start against a Spanish side that has emerged as one of the leading forces in women’s youth football.
Monday’s encounter will be the third meeting between Nigeria and Spain at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Falconets won the first meeting 2-1 in the 2016 group stage, but Spain claimed revenge two years later with a 2-1 quarter-final victory before going on to finish as runners-up.
Nigeria remain one of the tournament’s most consistent teams, having qualified for every edition of the competition. The Falconets have finished runners-up twice, losing to Germany in the 2010 and 2014 finals.
They also finished fourth in 2012 and have reached the quarter-finals on five occasions — in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2018 and 2022. Their only failures to progress beyond the group stage came in 2002 and 2016.
Spain, meanwhile, have enjoyed a remarkable transformation at the U-20 level after missing five consecutive editions of the tournament.
La Rojita reached the quarter-finals in 2016, finished runners-up in 2018, won their maiden title in 2022 and reached the quarter-finals again in 2024.
They will be looking to build on the growing success of Spanish women’s football, with the senior national team reigning world champions. Their squad also features players who gained experience at the 2024 and 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cups.
With both nations boasting strong tournament pedigrees, Monday’s clash presents the Falconets with an immediate test of their title ambitions.
A positive result against Spain would provide Nigeria with an ideal platform as they seek to finally end their long wait for a first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup crown.
