A dramatic stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli sent Brazil into the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the five-time champions fought back to defeat Japan 2-1 at Houston Stadium on Monday.

The Samurai Blue looked set to force the contest into extra time after a spirited display, but Martinelli struck in the 95th minute to complete Brazil’s comeback and end Japan’s impressive World Cup campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

Japan took a surprise lead in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano unleashed a stunning long-range effort that beat Alisson Becker. The Asian side held onto their advantage for the remainder of the first half, frustrating Brazil with a disciplined defensive performance.

Brazil responded strongly after the break, dominating possession and piling pressure on the Japanese defence in search of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute as Casemiro rose highest to head home Gabriel Magalhães’ cross, restoring parity at 1-1.

The South Americans continued to press for a winner but were repeatedly denied by an inspired Zion Suzuki, whose outstanding saves, along with Japan’s resolute defending, kept Carlo Ancelotti’s men at bay for much of the second half.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Brazil found the decisive breakthrough deep into stoppage time. Bruno Guimarães registered his fourth assist of the tournament with a perfectly weighted pass to Martinelli, who calmly slotted home in the 95th minute to seal a dramatic comeback victory.
