Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has praised the team’s formidable attacking lineup, stating that when they are firing on all cylinders, they can be a force to be reckoned with.
Troost-Ekong’s comments came after Nigeria’s emphatic 3-0 victory over the Benin Republic in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON Group D qualifiers. The win was secured thanks to a brace from recent Ballon d’Or nominee, Ademola Lookman and a goal from current Africa’s footballer of the year, Victor Osimhen, who replaced Victor Boniface.

The Super Eagles boast a wealth of attacking talent, including globally recognized forwards like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, Gift Orban, and more.
Reacting to the performance of the forward players, Troost-Ekong said, “Other countries are scared of our attacking talent. When they’re in their groove, they can win us games. We have a lot of quality up front, and it’s exciting to see them perform at such a high level.”
“I think with the attacking talent that we have, we don’t have to name them but everyone knows how dangerous we are. We know that if we play well and keep the door shut at the back, we’re going to create chances and score,” Troost-Ekong told the press after the win.
“I have great belief that if we give the boys enough ball in front they will put it away and today was a good indication of the direction we want to head in and the first step of many we have to take to be back at the AFCON.”
The Al-Kholood defender also stated that despite their respect for Benin, they understood their assignment which was to get the maximum points at all cost.
“We prepared to win the game, we respect Benin a lot. Last time we played against them, they won the game but we have great belief in the team and coaching staff and the coach, he’s like a family member who has come back to us now and we knew we had to take responsibility.”
The win over Benin sees Nigeria move top of Group D, they will be hoping to consolidate their position on top of the table when they travel to take on Rwanda on Tuesday.
