Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card as Coventry City’s difficult start to their 2026/27 Premier League campaign continued, with the newly-promoted side suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat to Brighton at the CBS Arena on Saturday.
Awoniyi, who had scored once in four matches this season, started in attack for Frank Lampard’s side but saw his afternoon cut short after he was sent off in the 53rd minute.
It marked another disappointing blow for Coventry, who are yet to score a goal or pick up a point in the Premier League this season. For Brighton, meanwhile, it was a memorable afternoon as they recorded their joint-biggest away win in Premier League history.
The Seagulls opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Charalampos Kostoulas, who found the back of the net with a well-taken finish. Malick Yalcouyé then doubled Brighton’s advantage six minutes into the second half, calmly slotting the ball past Carl Rushworth to score his second goal of the campaign.

Two minutes later, things went from bad to worse for Coventry as Awoniyi was shown a straight red card for catching Maxim De Cuyper with a stray elbow. The challenge was deemed deliberate violent conduct, with the decision upheld following a VAR review.
The numerical advantage gave Brighton even more control of the game, and they took full advantage to extend their lead. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute, with Pascal Groß making no mistake from the spot to make it 3-0.
Three minutes later, Coventry suffered another setback as Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka was forced off after he was unable to continue following an accidental incident in which a trailing defender stepped on his hand.
Brighton completed the rout with two late goals. Lewis Dunk found the net in the 83rd minute to make it 4-0 before Yasin Ayari added a fifth in stoppage time to seal a dominant victory for the Seagulls.
The result lifts Brighton up to fourth in the Premier League with seven points from four games. Coventry City, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table with no points, no goals scored and 10 goals conceded.
Awoniyi now faces a three-game ban which is the standard length for violent conduct. It means he’s set to miss Coventry’s trip to his former side Nottingham Forest next Saturday, as well as Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa and the Premier League meeting with Newcastle after the international break.
