At the Stadion Feijenoord, Rotterdam, on Saturday, November 30, Shawn Adewoye scored what could have been a historic goal as Fortuna Sittard came close to defeating Feyenoord in their stadium for the first time since the 2018-19 season and just the third time in the 21st century.
Feyenoord were on a 10 game unbeaten streak going into the fixture. They had also just come from a game where they equalized against English champions Manchester City, despite being 3-0 down before they scored in the 75th minute. The game was thus viewed as a straightforward victory for the Dutch powerhouse by many pundits and supporters alike.
Feyenoord made some changes to their starting line up due to their exhausting trip to the Etihad. Star striker, Santiago Gimenez was rested and replaced by 18-year-old Zepiqueno Redmond for his second Eredivisie start. On the other hand, Fortuna coach, Danny Buijs started Shawn Adewoye in the Right Centre back position.
The 24-year-old has been a constant presence for Fortuna in that position, starting 13 out of their 14 Eredivisie games and also starting 1 game in the Dutch Cup. He repaid the trust of the coach by netting from close range in the 33rd minute following a corner.
He was then monstrous in defense to protect the lead. He won 2/3 of his tackles and 3/5 of his ground duels while recording 5 clearances, 3 headed clearances, 3 interceptions, and 3 recoveries.
Despite the efforts of the Belgian-born defender, Santiago Gimenez who was initially rested came on to rescue a point for Feyenoord with a sublime overhead kick in the 81st minute. Feyenoord then mounted pressure on the away team in an attempt to win the game. However, Fortuna’s defense remained unwavering.
With the result, Fortuna have now gone 3 games without a win, however, they will draw inspiration from the fact that they were able to get a point away from home against Feyenoord. They will visit Heracles in their next game as they attempt to finally get back to winning ways.
