Nigeria’s Flamingos made a strong start to their 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup campaign, with the team securing a convincing 5-0 victory over Niger at the Yamoussoukro Stadium in Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday.
An early goal from captain Chidi Harmony, alongside further goals from Awawu Bashiru, Ohunene Sunday, Mary Dunstan and Ayomide Rotimi, saw the Flamingos turn their dominant display into a statement victory.
The Flamingos started the game on the front foot and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Harmony opened the scoring with a clinical finish following a patient team move, giving Nigeria a deserved lead.
Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 35th minute through another impressive finish from Awawu Bashiru. The goal came after the Niger goalkeeper fumbled her attempt to deal with a cross, allowing the Flamingos to capitalise and make it 2-0.

Niger managed to prevent Nigeria from adding to their tally until the closing stages of the match, when the Flamingos stepped up their attacking pressure. Ohunene Sunday made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute with a close-range header before Mary Dunstan found the net in similar fashion moments later to extend the lead to 4-0.
Ayomide Rotimi completed the scoring in the dying minutes of the match, finding the net after Niger failed to clear another set piece as the Flamingos wrapped up a comprehensive 5-0 victory and a winning start to the tournament.
Having secured all three points in their opening game, the Flamingos will now look to secure another win when they face rivals Ghana in their next match on Saturday.
