Genk Sporting Director, Dimitri de Condé, has revealed that the club attempted to re-sign former striker Paul Onuachu during the summer transfer window but were unsuccessful.
Paul Onuachu, who left Genk for Southampton in 2023, struggled to find his scoring touch in the Premier League and was subsequently loaned to Trabzonspor. In Turkey, the Nigerian forward rediscovered his goal-scoring form, netting 17 times in 25 appearances.

Despite Trabzonspor’s desire to secure Onuachu’s permanent transfer before the Turkish transfer window closes on September 13th, the deal remains uncertain due to Southampton’s asking price.
While Genk also expressed interest in bringing Onuachu back before their transfer window deadline on September 5th, de Condé stated that the player declined the offer, preferring to continue his career abroad.
“A return of Trésor has not been on the table. I have had contact with Paul several times,” de Condé said.
“Those were good conversations (with Onuachu), but I had those with him last year too. In those conversations, he said that Genk is and will remain his home and that he will come back home one day. But he wants to stay abroad at the moment. So we were not able to go for a transfer in the end.”
