Nigeria’s Flamingos have once again showcased their dominance at the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, storming into the quarterfinals with a 4-0 victory over Ecuador on Saturday.
The emphatic win, which follows their 4-1 triumph over New Zealand, secures their place in the last eight with a perfect six points from two matches.
Shakirat Moshood, who scored one of the tournament’s fastest goals in their opener, put the Flamingos ahead in the 26th minute, calmly converting a penalty after captain Taiwo Afolabi was brought down in the box.
Peace Effiong, relentless in attack, was twice denied by Ecuadorian goalkeeper Maria Rodriguez before halftime, while Harmony Chidi rattled the crossbar as Nigeria continued to press forward.
In the second half, Chidi found the back of the net in the 54th minute after a slick pass from Aishat Animashaun, opening her goal account for the tournament. Minutes later, Effiong capitalized on a poor clearance from substitute goalkeeper Pozo to score her first goal of the competition.
Moshood wrapped up the scoring in added time, blasting home her second of the match after a well-timed assist from Chidi.
With eight goals scored and only one conceded in two matches, the Flamingos will face hosts Dominican Republic on Tuesday night, already assured of a quarterfinal spot.
