Nigerian forward Uchenna Ogundu scored his first Bundesliga goal as Augsburg suffered a 5-2 defeat to RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

The 20-year-old found the back of the net in stoppage time after coming on in the 73rd minute for Rodrigo Ribeiro, offering a bright moment for Augsburg despite their disappointing afternoon.

The defeat extended Augsburg’s winless run in the Bundesliga to seven matches, leaving them 13th in the standings with nine points from nine games. Leipzig, meanwhile, climbed to third with 18 points after recording their fifth consecutive home league victory.

Augsburg made a dream start to the encounter, taking the lead just seconds after kick-off through Anton Kade. However, Leipzig responded with two goals in quick succession, as Ezechiel Banzuzi equalised in the 33rd minute before Christopher Nkunku put the hosts ahead two minutes later.

David Raum then extended Leipzig’s advantage just before the break with a spectacular free kick, sending his side into half-time with a 3-1 lead.

Leipzig maintained their dominance after the restart, with Rômulo making it 4-1 on the hour mark. Substitute Christoph Baumgartner added a fifth in the 66th minute, scoring just seconds after coming off the bench.

Ogundu eventually got on the scoresheet in stoppage time, reducing the deficit and giving Augsburg a late consolation, although it was not enough to prevent another league defeat.

Despite the result, the goal represents an important milestone for the Nigerian youngster, who will be hoping to build on the achievement and earn more playing time as the season progresses.

Ogundu has featured in just three Bundesliga matches this campaign, accumulating only 20 minutes of playing time without making a single start. His first league goal could provide a timely boost as he looks to establish himself in Augsburg’s first team.
