Nigeria’s Flamingos will face Japan in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on Saturday. The encounter presents Nigeria with an opportunity to claim their first-ever title in the competition. It also offers the country a chance to make African football history.

The Nigerian youngsters head into the showdown after recording five consecutive victories following their opening defeat to Poland. Their latest result was an impressive 3-1 semi-final triumph over Brazil. Nigeria registered 11 shots on target, with Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru leading the scoring charge. Bashiru scored twice to secure the Flamingos’ first appearance in the tournament’s final.

The final will take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm Nigerian time.

Victory would make Nigeria the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. No team from the continent has previously reached the competition’s final.

The Flamingos have already demonstrated considerable resilience throughout the tournament. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before recovering with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

Nigeria subsequently defeated defending champions DPR Korea 3-1 to secure qualification for the knockout stages. They maintained that momentum with a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16.

Azeezat Oduntan then converted a late penalty against Venezuela. Her 89th-minute strike secured a difficult 1-0 quarter-final victory and a place in the last four.

However, their semi-final performance against Brazil provided perhaps their biggest statement of intent. Queen Joseph opened the scoring before Bashiru completed her brace. Brazil managed a late consolation, but Nigeria comfortably secured their place in Saturday’s decider.

Japan present another difficult challenge

Japan will equally approach the encounter with considerable confidence. The Asian side defeated DPR Korea on penalties after their semi-final finished 1-1 in normal time.

Their qualification represents another appearance in the competition’s final. Japan previously lifted the trophy in 2014 after defeating Spain 2-0. They also reached the finals in 2010 and 2016.

The Japanese have scored 150 goals throughout their history in the competition. That remains the highest total recorded by any participating nation.

Busari’s Flamingos seek perfect ending

Busari and his technical crew will hope their tactical flexibility proves decisive against Japan. Their decision to introduce Bashiru into the starting lineup against Brazil produced an outstanding result.

The midfielder had previously accumulated just 74 minutes as a substitute. However, she responded to her opportunity with two important goals in the semi-final.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan will also remain an important figure. Her leadership and composure have helped Nigeria navigate difficult moments throughout the knockout stages.

Japan will undoubtedly provide a different examination. However, Nigeria have already overcome several difficult opponents on their journey to the final.

The Flamingos now stand one victory away from an achievement that would reshape the history of African youth women’s football.
