Taiwo Awoniyi made his Coventry City debut while Frank Onyeka played the full 90 minutes as the newly promoted side suffered a 3-0 defeat to reigning champions Arsenal in the 2026/27 Premier League opener on Friday.
Awoniyi, who recently joined Coventry from Nottingham Forest, was introduced in the 70th minute in place of Ellis Simms as manager Frank Lampard looked to find a way back into the contest. The Nigerian striker put in a decent effort and was tough to deal with, but was unable to prevent Arsenal from securing a comfortable victory.
Coventry’s long-awaited return to the Premier League, 25 years after their last appearance in the top flight, proved a difficult one as Arsenal produced a dominant display at the Emirates Stadium to begin their title defence in style.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute through Kai Havertz, who expertly finished into the far corner after being picked out by Riccardo Calafiori.

Arsenal doubled their advantage just eight minutes later. Premier League debutant Christos Tzolis delivered a dangerous low cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry away, with Bukayo Saka reacting quickest to roll the loose ball into an empty net.
Coventry managed to prevent further damage before half-time, but Arsenal proved difficult to contain in the second half.
Just four minutes after the break, captain Martin Ødegaard added a third goal, scuffing his effort into the net after receiving a pass from Ben White to put the champions firmly in control.
Lampard responded by making changes, bringing on Victor Torp in the 62nd minute before introducing Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni eight minutes later as Coventry searched for a route back into the game.

Despite the changes, Arsenal remained in command and continued to dominate possession. Coventry struggled to create opportunities, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya making just one save throughout the contest.
The victory sees Arsenal immediately move to the top of the Premier League table, exactly where they finished last season, as Mikel Arteta’s side make a strong statement at the start of their title defence.
Arsenal will return to league action in 10 days when they travel to face Aston Villa, looking to make it two wins from two.
Coventry, meanwhile, will have the chance to respond quickly when they travel to Plymouth in the EFL Cup on Tuesday before hosting fellow promoted side Hull City in the Premier League next Saturday as they chase their first points of the campaign.
