…Alex Iwobi tips France to compete for title

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has tipped England to win the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the wealth of talent within the Three Lions squad could make this their year.

Iwobi is not participating in the tournament after Nigeria failed to qualify, falling short in both the group stage and playoff rounds.

England got their World Cup campaign off to an impressive start with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, thanks to goals from in-form captain Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will look to build on that momentum when they face Ghana on Tuesday at Boston Stadium, with a win set to guarantee them a place in the knockout stages.

The Three Lions are widely expected to progress comfortably from Group L, which also includes Ghana, Panama, and Croatia, whom they have already defeated.

Iwobi, who represented England at U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels before committing his international future to Nigeria, believes England possess the quality, depth, and star power needed to lift the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

“I personally believe England have a great chance of winning the World Cup,” the Fulham midfielder told Sky Sports Football.

“They’ve got so many stars in the team and so much ability. Even the players who are not starting can come off the bench and hurt the opposition.”

While the Nigeria international is backing England to go all the way, he also acknowledges the threat posed by an in-form French side, whom he considers one of the tournament favourites.

“So, I’ll say England, but I also believe France are strong contenders. The attacking threat that France have is scary, but I actually hope England wins it.”

Aside from England, defending champions Argentina will be aiming to retain their crown, while former winners France, Spain, and Germany have also produced impressive performances in the tournament so far.
