…D’Tigers hope to impress despite limited training time

Nigeria’s D’Tigers will be hoping to open their 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers (Africa) on a strong note when they face hosts Tunisia today (5 pm) at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès.

All 12 invited players arrived in Tunisia on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s opener and will be targeting a winning start inside the 17,000-capacity arena.

Nigeria are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Rwanda and Guinea. They will aim to finish among the top three teams to secure passage to the second round, where Africa’s final five representatives for the 2027 FIBA World Cup will emerge.

Head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman has named a 12-man roster featuring four guards – Jordan Ogundiran, Mike Nuga, Paul Dibal and captain Ike Nwamu.

Also listed are small forwards Ugo Simon and Stan Okoye; power forwards Chingka Garba, Gus Okafor, Talib Zanna and Morris Udeze; while Olisa Akonobi and Christopher Obekpa will hold things down at centre.

Despite having limited time to train and build chemistry, the team will hope that individual talent and experience can drive them to victory.

The D’Tigers have not enjoyed the best run of form in recent years. They struggled to qualify for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket and crashed out in the quarter-finals, and recently dropped 11 places in the latest FIBA world rankings.
