Ella Onojuvwevwo delivered a historic performance at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, claiming the bronze medal in the women’s 400m on Saturday.
The 21-year-old crossed the finish line in 51.00 seconds to secure third place, becoming the first Nigerian woman in 32 years to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event. The last Nigerian to achieve the feat was Fatima Yusuf, who claimed silver at the 1994 Games.
Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley stormed to victory in a winning time of 50.21 seconds to claim gold, while Barbados’ Sada Williams finished second in 50.99 seconds to take the silver medal.
Speaking after the race, Onojuvwevwo expressed her delight at ending Nigeria’s long wait for a medal in the women’s 400m event.

“I’m really happy. I’ve had a lot of support from back home, from my parents, my coach, my teammates, from everybody in Team Nigeria,” she said.
“I’m really happy to win the bronze medal after a very, very long time. It’s really good.”
Looking ahead, Onojuvwevwo added: “I still have more competitions and hopefully I’ll be in the Ultimate World Championships.”
Onojuvwevwo’s podium finish boosted Team Nigeria’s impressive tally at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to 20 medals which have come across para powerlifting, weightlifting, as well as track and field athletics events.
Nigeria have now amassed 10 gold, six silver and four bronze medals as the country continues its strong showing across multiple sports at the Games.
