Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has called up Kaizer Chiefs right back Thabiso Monyane to replace the injured Nyiko Mobbie ahead of South Africa’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles on Tuesday, September 9, at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Mobbie was forced off the pitch just five minutes into Friday night’s 3-0 victory over Lesotho after a nasty clash of heads and was immediately replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa.
Bafana Bafana team doctor Tshepo Molobi confirmed that the Siwelele FC right back suffered a fracture of the eye socket in three places and had to undergo surgery on Saturday morning.
“The injury happened as a result of a clash of heads in the first half and he sustained a fracture of the eye socket in three places,” Dr Molobi said. “A further update will be communicated after Mobbie’s operation.”

Broos’ side will now welcome Monyane into camp this weekend as they intensify preparations for the highly anticipated clash against Nigeria. Meanwhile, Thabo Moloisane, who limped off in the 52nd minute against Lesotho, is expected to return to training on Saturday afternoon after recovering well.
Friday’s emphatic victory over Lesotho ensured South Africa maintained their five-point lead at the top of Group C, with Benin moving into second place on 11 points after a narrow 1-0 win over Zimbabwe on the same day.
The focus now shifts to Tuesday’s showdown against Nigeria, who face Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before traveling to Bloemfontein for what promises to be a high-stakes encounter for both nations.
