Head coach Eric Chelle has made two changes to the Super Eagles squad ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia, with captain Wilfred Ndidi and Victory Akpe replaced by Vince Osuji and John Otomewo.

The changes were announced on the Super Eagles’ official social media platforms on Friday as preparations continue for the friendly, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 6 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Ndidi was one of the established players included in Chelle’s initial 24-man squad announced on September 17. However, after featuring in both of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, the 29-year-old midfielder has now been rested for the upcoming friendly.

Basel defender Victory Akpe was among the 11 debutants initially called up for the Russia clash. The highly-rated 20-year-old will now have to wait longer for his Super Eagles debut, with the reason for his withdrawal yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Vince Osuji will be looking to make an impression with the national team. The 20-year-old defender, who can also operate in midfield, currently plays for Norwegian club Tromsø after completing a permanent move from Club Brugge in August 2026.

Also joining the squad is 19-year-old midfielder John Otomewo, who currently plays for Ligue 2 side Reims following his move from Hapoel Jerusalem in a transfer that was reportedly a club-record sale for the Israeli outfit.

Both players will now link up with their Super Eagles teammates as Nigeria look to return to winning ways against Russia.

The Super Eagles suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second 2027 AFCON qualifying match after opening their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar. The results leave Chelle’s side second in Group L with three points.
