Nigerian midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru scored the opening goal in Watford’s 2-0 derby victory over Luton on Sunday, marking a significant turnaround for “The Hornets”, who had suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of their opponents in the first half of the Championship season.

Watford’s determination to exact revenge was evident from the start, as they dominated the opening exchanges and deservedly won a penalty in the 10th minute. Thomas Kaminski’s foul proved costly, as Tom Dele-Bashiru stepped up to convert the spot kick, marking his third penalty goal of the season.

Just over 10 minutes later, Watford doubled their advantage through Edo Kayembe’s goal. The strike put Watford firmly in control of the match, and they continued to dictate the pace of the game. Luton, on the other hand, struggled to create any meaningful chances, and they were limited to zero shots on target in the first half.

Despite their dominance, Watford were unable to add to their two goals before halftime. However, they maintained their defensive solidity in the second half, thwarting Luton’s attempts to mount a comeback. Luton head coach Matt Bloomfield, made three halftime substitutions in an attempt to inject some energy into his team, but Watford’s compact defense held firm.

The victory propelled Watford to 9th place in the table with 48 points, just three points behind Blackburn, who occupy the final playoff spot for promotion to the Premier League. The win also marked Watford’s second consecutive victory, their first back-to-back wins since November.

Luton, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 28 points. Their 13-game winless streak continues to weigh heavily on the team, and they will be desperate to end their drought when they host Portsmouth next.

Having secured consecutive wins, Watford will aim to maintain their momentum in their next game against Stoke on Saturday. A win could potentially propel them into the playoff spots, and they will be eager to capitalize on their current form.
