Super Eagles and Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that his father’s passion for education is a major motivation behind his decision to continue pursuing academic qualifications alongside his football career.
The 29-year-old recently earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Directorship with Merit from the PFA Business School, marking his third postgraduate qualification.
Speaking with BBC News Africa, Awoniyi explained that his desire to continue learning was instilled in him by his father from a young age.
“Education is something I value a lot because I believe knowledge is power. I’m always curious to learn, I want to know more about football, know about the structure of the game,” Awoniyi said.
“My dad was someone that really was keen on education. And the promise I made to him is if he allowed me to play, I will always try to learn more. I’ve always continued like that since I was a kid.”
Awoniyi spent four seasons with Nottingham Forest before completing a summer move to newly-promoted Premier League side Coventry City, but his football commitments have not stopped him from pursuing his academic ambitions.
The Nigeria international believes footballers can create time for education despite their demanding schedules, stressing that commitment and willingness are key.
“I think every footballer has a space in the evenings. You can just get on your laptop and study. The balance for me is a bit not that difficult. It’s all about how willing you are to do it,” he added.
“I always say to every footballer, it’s good to know what you’re into.”

Awoniyi credited his family, particularly his wife, siblings and parents, for their continued support throughout his academic journey.
“My wife, my brothers and sisters, my parents, they have been so supportive. It’s just a way to say to my dad, I will keep your dream alive as well,” he said.
“Achieving all this together with football is something I’m very, very proud of.”
With three postgraduate qualifications already under his belt, Awoniyi’s academic achievements are setting him up to become one of football’s future leaders, both on and off the pitch.
