Nigeria begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday knowing that finishing above two opponents will be essential to reaching the tournament. With Tanzania already qualified as co-hosts, only one of Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will take the remaining place from Group L.
CAF’s format makes this different from the usual race for two qualification places. Tanzania will still play their six group matches, and those results count towards the standings. The available ticket goes to the highest-placed team among the other three countries, regardless of where Tanzania finish.
That makes Friday’s home match an important starting point for Eric Chelle’s side. Nigeria travel to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, so their first two games are against the teams directly competing with them for qualification. Six points would put the Super Eagles in a strong position before the next window. Dropped points would leave more work to do in the remaining four matches.
Chelle must approach the double-header without Victor Osimhen, who has been ruled out through injury. Taiwo Awoniyi has been brought in as a replacement, while Tolu Arokodare, Akor Adams and George Ilenikhena give the coach other options through the middle. Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon are also available to provide attacking support.

There is enough quality in that group to win both matches, but replacing Osimhen involves more than choosing another centre-forward. Nigeria must still create chances regularly and give whoever starts the service to take them. The responsibility also falls on the players around the striker to contribute goals, particularly if Madagascar make it difficult to find space near their penalty area.
Arokodare arrives after scoring for Ajax against Excelsior, a reminder that Chelle has forwards capable of making an immediate impact. The selection decision should also take account of how the attacking players combine. Picking several in-form forwards will only help if Nigeria can get the ball to them in useful positions.
Friday could bring a personal milestone for Simon, who has made 99 appearances for the Super Eagles. Another outing would take the winger to 100 caps, more than a decade after his international debut in 2015. His experience should be valuable in an attack adjusting to Osimhen’s absence.
Qualification will not be decided in Uyo, but Nigeria have an opportunity to establish themselves early in a group they will be expected to win. The immediate requirement is three points at home before the trip to Guinea-Bissau. Both matches kick off at 5pm Nigerian time, on September 25 and September 29 respectively.
