Nigerian basketball sensation Rueben Chinyelu has declared for the 2026 NBA Draft while retaining his college eligibility, leaving the door open for a possible return to school.
The 22-year-old was a standout performer during the 2025/26 NCAA season, earning multiple accolades, including the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, NABC Defensive Player of the Year, and SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Defensive Team, capping off a dominant campaign.
Chinyelu announced his decision to enter the draft on his social media platforms stating that he is retaining his eligibility should he choose to opt out of the draft process.
“First, I would like to thank God for the growth, strength, and guidance He has given me through all of my successes and challenges throughout my career to this point,” Chinyelu wrote on social media.

“Thank you Coach Golden, Coach Hartman, the entire coaching staff, trainers, and team managers for investing their time and energy in me, and helping shape me into the man I am today.
“To my teammates, our brotherhood, Bond, and memories will stay with me forever. Thank you to the rowdy reptiles and all of Gator Nation for the love and support I’ve received since I arrived on campus
With that said, I am declaring for the NBA draft, while maintaining my college eligibility to return to the University of Florida, if I decide to withdraw. Forever Grateful Always!!”
Chinyelu had previously entered the 2025 NBA Draft but withdrew to return to college for another year. That decision paid off, as he showcased greater consistency and maturity, elevating his impact on both ends of the floor.

In a recent 2026 NBA Mock Draft by Sports Illustrated and other reputable outlets, Chinyelu is projected as a late second-round pick, with the Washington Wizards listed as a potential destination.
The 2026 NBA Draft is scheduled to take place at the Barclays Center in New York. Chinyelu has until May 27 to decide whether to remain in the draft or return to college.
Before making that decision, he will aim to boost his stock at the NBA Draft Combine, which begins on May 10 in Chicago. The event will offer him valuable feedback on his professional prospects.
Standing at 6-foot-10 and weighing 265 pounds, Chinyelu made history as the first Florida player in 50 years to average a double-double, posting 10.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game last season. The Gators went 19-0 in games where he recorded a double-double, underlining his immense influence and physical presence on the court.
