Nigerian basketball sensation and Florida Gators center Rueben Chinyelu has been named the 2026 NCAA Southeastern Conference (SEC) Defensive Player of the Year and SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Monday, Bold Sports reports.

Chinyelu has enjoyed an outstanding season with the Gators, averaging 11.4 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. The 22-year-old has been a dominant presence on both ends of the floor, playing a key role in helping Florida finish the regular season with a 25–6 overall record and a 16–2 mark in SEC play, the best record in the conference.

In addition to being named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Chinyelu was also selected to the SEC All-Defensive First Team alongside fellow Nigerians Cyril Somto (Georgia) and Felix Okpara (Tennessee), as well as Billy Richmond III (Arkansas) and Tyler Tanner (Vanderbilt).

Beyond his defensive accolades, Chinyelu was also named to the 2025–26 SEC Men’s Basketball Second Team, recognition of his all-round impact this season. Another Nigerian standout, Otega Oweh (Kentucky), also earned a place on the second team alongside Nate Ament (Tennessee), Mark Mitchell (Missouri), and Dailyn Swain (Texas).

It was a memorable day for Florida, as head coach Todd Golden was named SEC Coach of the Year, while Urban Klavzar won the Sixth Man of the Year award. Forward Thomas Haugh earned a place on the SEC First Team, and Alex Condon was named to the Third Team.

Chinyelu is widely regarded as one of the top defenders in U.S. college basketball and is projected to be a second-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
