Ipswich Town have made a late approach to sign Chuba Akpom from Ajax, as they try to hijack Birmingham City’s proposed move for the Nigerian striker, according to reports from Sky Sports journalist Darmesh Sheth and Anthony Joseph.

Akpom was expected to undergo a medical at Birmingham today after the Championship side reached an agreement with Ajax for a season-long loan with an obligation to buy if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

However, the new interest from Ipswich could complicate matters, with Middlesbrough and Greek giants Olympiakos also reportedly monitoring the situation.

If Ajax agree terms with more than one club, the final decision is expected to rest with the player, who is now at the centre of a late transfer tussle.

The 29-year-old forward is currently contracted to Dutch giants Ajax but spent the second half of last season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lille, where he featured 16 times in all competitions, scoring three goals and recording one assist.

Akpom is no stranger to English football, having started his career at Arsenal’s Hale End academy. He went on to gain valuable experience across the divisions, playing in League One for Brentford and Coventry City, and later in the Championship for Nottingham Forest, Hull City, and Brighton. His most productive spell came at Middlesbrough, where he scored 34 goals in 82 appearances across two stints, before securing a move to Ajax in 2023.

Birmingham City had hoped to pair Akpom with fellow Nigerian Bright Osayi-Samuel, who recently joined the Blues from Fenerbahçe. But with Ipswich now entering the race and other clubs circling, Akpom’s immediate future remains uncertain.

As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on the striker’s decision in the coming hours or days.
