Birmingham City are on the verge of securing a deal for Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom, with the Ajax forward set to arrive in England today to undergo a medical, according to journalist Anthony Joseph, Bold Sports reports.

The Championship club have reached an agreement with Ajax for a season-long loan deal that includes an obligation to buy if Birmingham secure promotion to the Premier League.

Akpom, 29, is currently contracted to Dutch giants Ajax but spent the second half of last season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lille. During his time in France, the former Arsenal academy product made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering one assist.

Chuba Akpom came through Arsenal’s Hale End academy and gained experience in England with loan spells at Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, and Brighton, before enjoying a prolific stint at Middlesbrough, where he scored 34 goals in 82 appearances.

During his time at Ajax, he featured in 68 games across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and recording four assists before moving on loan in January due to reduced game time.

If the deal is completed, Akpom will join fellow Nigerian Bright Osayi-Samuel at Birmingham City. The versatile fullback joined the Blues earlier this summer after spending over four years at Turkish side Fenerbahçe.

The club, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2011, are hoping that the addition of experienced and quality players like Akpom can help power their return to the top flight.
