TSG Hoffenheim are actively seeking to bolster their central defense, with Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha and Felix Uduokhai emerging as potential targets.
The Bundesliga club’s need for defensive reinforcements has become more pressing, especially in light of Ozan Kabak’s recent cruciate ligament injury.
Hoffenheim’s current defensive lineup has faced challenges, with high-profile signings Attila Szalai and Stanley Nsoki struggling to meet expectations. Szalai, who was previously loaned to Freiburg, may be on the move again, with Turkish side Trabzonspor showing interest. Nsoki, meanwhile, is set to miss the start of the new season due to ankle problems.
With only Kevin Akpoguma and academy product Tim Drexler as reliable center-back options, and Kabak sidelined for months, Hoffenheim are exploring various possibilities to strengthen their backline.
Initially, the club showed interest in former U-21 German international Jonathan Torunarigha (26), who has been impressing at Belgian side Gent following his stint with Hertha BSC. However, this trail seems to have cooled off recently.
Attention has now turned to a more local option. According to kicker, Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai has emerged as a potential candidate. The 25-year-old shares several similarities with Torunarigha – both are left-footed, have represented Germany at the U-21 level, and have Nigerian heritage like Akpoguma.
Uduokhai, who began his career at 1860 Munich, moved to Wolfsburg for €1m in 2017. After a loan spell, he was signed permanently by Augsburg for €7m in 2020. With his contract set to expire next summer, his current market value is estimated to be around the same figure.
The prospect of regular playing time and potential European football with Hoffenheim could be attractive for Uduokhai. However, he is likely one of several candidates being considered by TSG, who may also look to strengthen other areas of their defense.
